Richard Rumsey began in 1958 as an equipment operator and today owns and operates one of the most experienced excavating/underground contracting firms in the Lansing area.

In 1956, while working for T.A. Forsberg as an operator, Dick started Richard Rumsey Company. He bought his own backhoe and worked nights and weekends for his own company. He then started working as a subcontractor for Forsberg and McNamara.

In 1968 Dick started Rumsey Construction Company. Then, in 1984, he formed Rumsey & Sons Construction, Inc. Dick has always been in the excavating and sewer businesses. In the beginning, Richard Rumsey Company did primarily municipality work. In the late 1960s, Rumsey Construction expanded into single family development subdivision. Once Rumsey & Sons Construction, Inc. was formed, Rumsey Construction rented equipment to them for several years. Rumsey Construction was then dissolved in 1996.

Today, Rumsey & Sons Construction, Inc. does approximately half of its work in single family subdivision, a quarter in commercial work, and a quarter in municipality work. The company has a good working relationship with local municipalities and a good reputation all over the state of Michigan. We assure the prints are correct prior to starting a job and go out of our way to give total service to the owner. The company often works as an agent for the project owner, working with townships and other municipalities to ensure the work progresses on an appropriate schedule.

Rumsey & Sons Construction, Inc. also offers a total service package. Acting as a construction manager the company can take ideas, put them on the drawing board, and hen do the actual installation.The company has several local construction and engineering firms with whom we have worked in our 40 years of business who could be recommended to customers. This allows us to take a raw piece of land, balance the land and site grading of a subdivision, install the sanitary, storm and water systems, and subcontract for the curb, gutter and asphalt paving.

Today we have all of the latest computerized equipment and software for job estimating. The company can take information supplied from an engineering firm, either by compact disc or downloaded from electronic mail, giving a more accurate cost estimate. A Total Station with up to date software is used for staking a job, to auto grading and providing asbuilts to the owner for locating leads and such at a later date if needed.

Dick Rumsey is currently the President. In the past, Dick was General Superintendent, overseeing four sanitary sewer and dirt crews, a sand pit operation with many other supported personnel. The company has had a total of 70 employees at one time. currently Dick's duties are to work where is needed.

Rodney Rumsey, Dick's son, is currently General Superintendent and Chief Estimator. Also, Rod does all of the material purchasing and schedules subcontractors. Rod has been with the company since 1976 and became a full-time employee upon his graduation in 1981. Some of the duties Rod has performed over the years are equipment operator, foreman, and equipment & maintenance manager.

Lisa Rumsey, Rodney's wife, has been with the company since 1985. As Office Manager, she keeps the office running smoothly by handling all of the job costing, securing all necessary permits for each project, and is the main source of communication with customers and vendors.

Steve Carlson came to the company as controller in October of 1995. Steve is a graduate of Michigan State University where he received his Bachelor's in Accounting. His experience spans 30 years in the accounting profession in manufacturing finance and business administration. Steve's current capacity is as our accountant and financial advisor.

To add to operating and successful business over the past 40 years, Dick has several key employees who have been with him for many years. One long-term employee is Geoffrey DuBois who has over 20 years' experience as a truck driver. Geoff has also helped out in the field when needed and assists Rod in many capacities. Robert Rumsey has 20 years of experience as an equipment operator. Robert is knowledgeable in many aspects of our industry and is valuable asset to Rumsey & Sons Construction, Inc. these and other employees who have been with the company for several years give Rumsey & Sons a wealth of experience which we can offer to our customers.
